Your Questions About Carbon Dioxide

John asks…

Carbon dioxide?

What is it about carbon dioxide that causes it to be a gas that contributes to global warming?

admin answers:

Carbon-di-oxide is supposed to be a green house gas. It actually traps the infrared(heat) radiations emitted by the sun and thus contributing to the increase in temperature of the atmosphere.
The word ‘green house’ refers to a structure where plants are maintained under an glass chamber and this glass traps the heat radiations of the sun. Thus heat is produced to keep the plants from cold.
CO2 acts in the same way, but it has a negative effect and leads to global warming and melting of ice.

Hope this helps.

Thomas asks…

carbon dioxide?

in carbon dioxide are the intermolecular bonds weak or strong and are the intra molecular bonds weak or strong? also what is the relation of melting point, solubility and other properties to carbon?

admin answers:

Melting point −57 °C (216 K), pressurised
Boiling point −78 °C (195 K), sublimes
Density and phase 1600 kg/m³, solid
approx. 1.98 kg/m³, gas at STP
Solubility in water 1.45 kg/m³
Latent heat of
sublimation 25.13 kJ/mol .

Laura asks…

Carbon Dioxide?

Why is carbon dioxide bad for our Earth?
Why is it good?

admin answers:

Good – Carbon dioxide is a raw material for photosynthesis. Food webs rely on photosynthesis to trap the sun’s energy and get everything started.

Bad – Excess carbon dioxide is a contributor to global warming. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. We need greenhouse gases to keep Earth from being starkly cold at night, but too much greenhouse gas can be like having too many blankets. Some heat needs to escape or we’ll get too hot.

Joseph asks…

CArbon dioxide…………………………………………..?

would carbon dioxide or sulphur dioxide or nitrogen monoxide dissolve in carbon tetrachloride?

admin answers:

CO2 should have the highest solubility in CCl4 because it is the least polar of those gases.
