‘World’s largest conservation agreement’ signed in Canada

Latest news 26 May 2010

An ‘unprecedented’ agreement has been signed by members of the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and nine leading environmental organisations.

Greenpeace revealed that the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement will protect an area twice the size of Germany.

According to Greenpeace, new logging on almost 29 million hectares of the Boreal Forest will be suspended in order to develop conservation plans for the endangered caribou species.

Avrim Lazar, president and chief executive of FPAC, commented: “The importance of this agreement cannot be overstated.

“Together we have identified a more intelligent, productive way to manage economic and environmental challenges in the Boreal that will reassure global buyers of our products’ sustainability.”

He added that it’s “gratifying” to see the group’s efforts to transform the forestry industry come to fruition “in a process that will set a forestry standard that will be the envy of the world”.

The agreement will also implement a full-life cycle approach to forest carbon management as well as support the economic future of forest communities.
