‘Whole new scale’ of support needed for energy-efficient homes

Latest news 02 June 2010

A “whole new scale” of support is required to move forward in the bid to make buildings carbon neutral.

This is according to councillor Nigel Murphy, executive member for the environment at Manchester City Council.

He said: “The start we have made in supporting homeowners and landlords to implement energy saving measures to reduce their fuel bills and carbon emissions is going to have to move to a whole new scale.

“There is going to be a need for investment which will be challenging in the current economic climate, but the retrofitting work on existing homes and buildings can be a major enterprise.”

Manchester is aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the city by 41 per cent by 2020 from levels seen in 2005.

In addition, the council hopes to engage a wider range of people in “the process of culture change and embed low carbon thinking into the lifestyles of operations in the UK”.
