The “eyes of the world” are looking towards Mexico this week as UN leaders take part in the Climate Change Conference in Cancun.
Speaking at the opening of the event yesterday (November 29th), Mexican President Felipe Calderon urged UN negotiators to make progress in climate talks.
” Climate change is an issue that affects life on a planetary scale,” he said.
“What this means is that you will not be here alone negotiating in Cancun. By your side, there will be billions of human beings, expecting you to work for all of humanity.”
Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne agreed that people around the world will be “expecting to see us prepare the ground” for major changes, although he predicted that a full binding deal will not be made in the Cancun talks, which run until December 10th.
He said that progress will be made on issues including providing financial assistance to developing countries to deal with climate change, as well as agreeing to a system to ensure countries stick to emission reduction targets.
