The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has called for the construction industry to proactively improve energy efficiency without government mandates.

Building.co.uk reported that the sustainability body has stressed the need for construction professionals to act as quickly as possible to reduce carbon emissions, suggesting that working by government targets will slow down the process.

It will therefore create a business plan to show how improving the carbon footprint of the sector can be profitable.

Paul King, chief executive of the UK-GBC, told the news provider: “This has got to be about business stepping up and saying: ‘This represents a business opportunity’.

“There are currently things that the government needs to do, but we will have to do most of this ourselves.”

A consultation document will be launched in April and will examine where the markets for green building are.

The organisation has also called on its members to disclose data on their carbon footprints and calculate full-life carbon for buildings, the website stated, in order to achieve the goal to reduce emissions of the built environment by half by 2020.
