And how about a small displacement V8 while we’re at it? Sub-3000 pound car with a 4 to 4.5 liter V8, and a 6 speed with a very tall 6th gear, and you could have a great performer while still getting mileage as good as you’d ever want. Once you get around 30, unless you’ve got a ridiculous commute you just aren’t saving enough gas to make it worth the sacrifices in performance. Like this by falcon044 June 20, 2010 9:41 AM PDT FYI – The 2011 Ford Mustang with the V6 gets 30mph on the highway and has 300 HP. Now that gorgeous sports hatchback form is back as a hybrid car (also a slightly different name.) Like this Reply to this comment by MadLyb June 18, 2010 4:25 AM PDT If they would only offer a non-hybrid version. Like this Reply to this comment 1 person likes this comment by d4nowar June 18, 2010 4:40 AM PDT Here’s my tip to Honda for making this a MUCH better car:
Drop all of the hybrid tech and just make it run on good old gas. Tadaaa. You now have a better car! Or for those of you who would rather leave their gas in the pumps for me to buy instead, just make it fully electric. A hybrid sports car is just trying to be two things at once, and it’s going to be sub-par with each. Either be a gas sports car, or an electric one. CR-X’s already had good mileage. So they spent the last 20 years adding hybrid technology to a car that didn’t need it. Yay for progress. Like this Reply to this comment 2 people like this comment by CommanderLogjam June 18, 2010 8:02 AM PDT My 1991 CR-X would consistently get 48-50 MPG on the highway. It appears they spent the last 19 years making the milage worse.
I wish I had some understanding as to what is going on. Like this 4 people like this comment by Jim-D June 18, 2010 1:57 PM PDT Yeah . I had a ’91 CRX HF , too . It got well over 40 mpg in the city . Way more on the highway . Like this 1 person likes this comment by sweetings June 18, 2010 11:00 PM PDT These days cars are required to carry much more weight (either by gov’t regulation or competition): multiple airbags, side-impact door beams, improved fore and aft crumple zones, off-center crash protection, rollover crush-resistant roofs, and sound insulation. Sure, the ol’ CRX was a great handling car w/ great mileage. But, which car would you rather be in if involved in a high-speed accident? I’ll take my chances on a 2011 CR-Z over the 1991 CR-X. Like this by insightman June 18, 2010 5:14 AM PDT My 2006 Honda Insight Classic has a manual transmission (as did my 2000 Insight Classic), so the CR-Z is not a first. Also, my car–designed in 1998–is just a half-second slower to 60 mph but can get double the CR-Z’s gas mileage. I’m seeing 78 mpg this week. However, I will admit my stereo is a lot weaker than the CR-Z’s 360-watt unit. Like this Reply to this comment 2 people like this comment by LinuxRules June 18, 2010 2:23 PM PDT I would second this. My 2000 Honda Insight is a 5-speed manual and is still running great. It was getting 29.8 km/l (kilometer per liter) on the highway. They did not add automatic CVT until 2003, I believe. So what is the ‘kilometerage’ to this hybrid? I mean that is the only reason they make hybrids after all, for extended fuel usage, it would be nice if the reporter actually reported this. Be all in all it sounds like a ride in an Insight, even looks a lot it from the rear.
And when in hell is Honda going to add a Digital Radio (HD does not stand for anything so why use the useless lettering), everyone else is adding it. And what up with no build in solar panel on the roof? Get with it Honda. Like this by jaguar717 June 20, 2010 6:35 PM PDT Building a solar panel into the roof would only appeal to trendy blueblood types while turning away practical types. It would be nothing more than aesthetics with a huge price tag.
A solar panel covering the entire roof would costs thousands, and still not generate enough power in direct sun to affect your mileage in the slightest. At best it would top off the battery if you left it parked for weeks at a time–solar just doesn’t generate nearly enough energy to even offset your stereo, much less anything that actually moves. The Honda Civic Hybrid was released with a manual transmission. I believe the last year the manual was offered in the hybrid was 2005 (the one I have). Glad they are offering it in the CR-Z. Like this by jrup June 18, 2010 7:36 AM PDT Fifty-odd years ago my family and I were driving VWs and Hillmans which got more than 30MPG (gas was 17 cents a gallon) – they were ‘fun’, too, but hardly the best we could do, even back then. I wonder how many MPG those skimmers and oil burners in our Gulf of Mexico or soppers on the Alaskan tundra or shale-oil patients in Canada are getting. How much ‘fun’ they are having. And speaking of ‘fun’, our troops are having a giggle out there in Afghan no-man’s land, just knowing that so many prefer a future of gasoline to electric, or wind, which the sun provides us free. Gasoline, if it were properly priced for all of its costs, would go for around US $12 a gallon. How much ‘fun’ would that be? America used to be better at forging a future.
