Sybase (News – Alert) Inc. announced the availability of SQL Anywhere, a database and synchronization solution that is optimized for mission-critical database applications.

These applications are normally running outside traditional data center environments requiring little or no onsite IT support.  Major new enhancements are provided by the latest version of SQL Anywhere. These include support for storage and synchronization of spatial data, iPhone (News – Alert) devices and large-scale synchronization environments. New self-management features are also included in the latest version. SQL Anywhere 12 is a core component of the Sybase Mobile Platform. This platform is the industry’s first and most expansive framework of best-in-class mobility servers, mobile applications and mobile services. Enterprises are empowered by this platform to transform the way they connect to their customers and enable their employees. Database and synchronization support for iPhone, BlackBerry (News – Alert), and Windows Mobile Smartphone devices has been offered for the first time by Sybase. Spatial data support in its mobile database and synchronization platform is also being offered by Sybase for the first time. In a release, Merv Adrian, Principal Analyst, IT Market Strategy said, “SQL Anywhere is a best kept secret among more than 20,000 developers who relish its ease of embedding and minimal database administration. With its already expansive following and existing strength in healthcare, retail, financial services and government markets, and marquee customers with large deployments such as the 2010 US Census, China Customs, and Pepsi Bottling Group, SQL Anywhere is poised to extend its leadership further.” High transaction volume database servers are able to offload read-only and reporting transactions to a self-managing tree of scale-out servers with the scale-out support. Some of the developer productivity enhancements include new Oracle/MySQL compatibility. SQL Anywhere 12 also has support for .NET (News – Alert) 4.0 and Visual Studio 2010. Enhanced full-text search filtering capabilities are also present in this latest version. In a release, Dave Neudoerffer, VP, Engineering, Sybase said, “SQL Anywhere 12 is a culmination of research and development that serves existing customers while addressing emerging requirements for embedded database server and mobile applications. This SQL Anywhere release breaks new ground with innovations for growing data volume, diverse data types and new device platforms to further enhance Sybase’s leading mobility platform.”
