The success of the Green Investment Bank will rely on the quality and professionalism of green engineers and installers, it has been suggested.
Kevin Wellman, operations director at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, welcomed the announcement that the bank would open with £3 billion worth of funding rather than the initial £1 billion planned.
However, he noted that as consumer confidence is “fragile”, it is important to make sure that installations are of high quality.
“A few badly-installed installations could derail the whole process,” he said.
Mr Wellman added that the success of the Green Deal will also be heavily reliant on green professionals.
The scheme “demands competent people and recognised heating professionals to be involved with installations and the guidance,” the expert urged.
He also highlighted the importance of introducing a fair registration process to eliminate cowboy installers, something that energy secretary Chris Huhne has called attention to.
“The essential thing is to look after the consumers’ interests; the people that are paying for new equipment and also hopefully reaping the rewards over a period of time to achieve cost savings,” Mr Wellman remarked.
