Straw homes? Ecobuild’s top five trends revealed

From straw homes to bees, Building.co.uk has taken a look at the top five trends to come out of sustainability conference Ecobuild this week.

First, it notes that straw are set to be a major feature in sustainable materials, as Bill Dunster’s StramitZED zero carbon house goes on display, which it claims costs £20,000 less than a house built to Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Modcell’s project also features straw bale panels, plastered with lime render.

Second in the list is phase change materials, which can be used to store heating and cooling for air conditioning, while building 20-storey tower blocks out of sustainable timber will also be featured at the event.

The news provider noted that using bees to encourage biodiversity in cities will also be an issue taking centre stage at Ecobuild.

Finally, it lists the exhibit by Kingston University that will attract a lot of interest. Researchers are looking at using sustainable materials used in other sectors but not construction to see how they can be used for the industry, such as waste heading for landfill.
