Smart meters ‘need to be user-friendly to drive energy savings’, reports suggests

User-friendly smart meters can play a key role in helping homeowners reduce their energy consumption levels, a new report has suggested.

Research carried out by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) looked into 57 separate studies into the benefits of smart meters.

The team working at the Washington-based organisation found strong evidence that such devices do help consumers make significant energy consumption savings.

However, the research also found that smart meters that present information to users in a simplified way, rather than bombarding them with information, tend to produce better results.

“The more useful, readily understandable and actionable information you can provide, the better,” ACEEE executive director Steven Nadel advised utilities firms.
