Salary sacrifice schemes are lowering the carbon emissions of fleets and companies as a whole, research has found.
North Yorkshire County Council has used its green car scheme to bring the emissions of 200 new cars down to 112 g/km carbon emissions on average.
This is compared to the 156 g/km average found in previous fleet vehicles in the council, showing that staff are choosing cars with better fuel consumption and lower emissions.
Indeed, one scheme by Tusker claims that employees usually pick cars with 30-40 g/km less CO2 emissions than their previous vehicle.
David Hosking, managing director of Tusker, said: “What we are now seeing is a definite trend amongst employees on a salary sacrifice car scheme to select greener, cleaner, less polluting cars.
“As the example at North Yorkshire CC clearly shows this also has the effect of driving down emissions across the organisation.”
Research by the company found that drivers under its scheme had selected cars with an average of 119 g/km carbon emissions, while contract hire fleet employees had chosen cars with 149.5 g/km average emissions.
