Remove caps before recycling bottles, consumers told

Latest news 11 June 2010

Consumers have been reminded to take the bottle caps off of their bottles to make recycling more efficient.

Ahead of an expected increase in waste during the World Cup, Herefordshire Council has highlighted the fact that bottle caps tend not to be recyclable.

Laura Blackwell, recycling officer at the council, said: “During the World Cup, many more people will be enjoying a drink while they watch the exciting football matches and we want to ensure the empty ones do not go to waste.

“The only thing I would ask is that people ensure they take the tops off the bottles before they put them into the wheeled bins as the tops cannot be recycled.”

She added that residents can make use of the fortnightly recycling service and dispose of bottles and cans in their own green wheelie bins.

The reminder follows comments from communities secretary Eric Pickles backing a scheme which rewards households for recycling.

Mr Pickles indicated his approval for the project, which has been launched as a pilot scheme in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
