Offshore wind to play a ‘central role’ in future energy generation

The offshore wind industry faces a “unique opportunity” to play a central role in the UK’s energy future, it has been claimed.

Maria McCaffery, chief executive of RenewableUK, said offshore wind “without a doubt” has a part to play in the energy generation landscape.

However, she claimed that delivering on its “extraordinary potential” will not be an easy task.

In addition to innovation from the companies involved in the industry, it will also require strong leadership from government, she suggested.

Ms McCaffery’s comments come after GE Energy announced plans to install up to five offshore wind turbines through partnerships with two Norwegian firms.

The expert said that at the moment, although the new government looks to be committed to offshore wind, there is still no clear indication of the “eventual path” it will take on renewable energy.
