Obama urges green energy development after BP oil spill

Latest news 28 May 2010

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico shows that the world must move towards renewable energy, the US president has said.

Barack Obama told a crowd gathered at a solar plant in California that the “heartbreaking” spill is a clear indication that alternative fuel sources need to be developed.

“Just think about it. Part of what is happening in the Gulf is that oil companies are drilling a mile under water before they hit ground, and a mile below that before they hit oil,” he added.

“With the increased risks, the increased costs, it gives you a sense of where we’re going. We’re not going to be able to sustain this kind of fossil fuel use. This planet can’t sustain it.”

A statement from BP released earlier this morning (Thursday, May 27th) said that “top kill” operations to contain the spill had been continuing through the night.

The company added that it had nothing significant to report but would provide regular updates on the situation.
