Motorists urged to consider the type of car they need

Motorists have been urged by one environmental NGO to consider the type of car they really need.

Chris Nobel, spokesman for the Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment, said that many people often choose a car based on their summer holiday, “hauling unnecessarily large, heavy and gas-guzzling cars to work every day”, while they could consider cars “which are the most fuel-efficient”.

He noted that the main environmental impact of a car is running it, stressing the importance of fuel efficiency and smarter driving, which according to the Energy Saving Trust, can cut fuel bills by around £200-£300 for a car travelling 12,000 miles a year.

Car sharing and leasing vehicles can also be a more efficient approach to driving and car ownership.

“But most importantly, whether buying a new car or choosing a lease vehicle, people should consider [whether] they really need a car in the first place,” Mr Nobel added, noting that drivers could consider alternatives such as public transport, moving closer to work or even working from home.
