Mobile phone recycling urged

Latest news 28 May 2010

Britons have been urged to recycle their old mobile phones by one environmental organisation.

Waste Watch said that it is very important to recycle mobiles as they have now become fast moving items.

The process of recycling them is very simple and an added incentive is that users can be paid for it, said Mike Webster, the campaign group’s spokesman.

“It’s also a great source of income for organisations like charities. You can donate them to charities and they can get paid for it,” he added.

“There’s no reason not to do it. It’s very easy, you can just pop it in an envelope and off it goes. You don’t even have to leave your home.”

Earlier this year, a report from technology firm Ovum revealed that some eight million mobile phones were recycled in the UK in 2009.

This is double the figure from 2007, the data revealed, and shows that users are becoming more conscious of the environment.
