Wind turbines with blades larger than the span of the London Eye could be the future of green energy development.
The first giant turbine in the UK, which stands 574ft (175m) tall and has a diameter of 100ft (30m), is already under construction.
Named Britannia, the massive turbine is likely to be located off the coast of the north-east of England when it is completed in 2012.
Project leader Bill Grainger has now said that its development could be the start of a trend of huge turbines.
“There isn’t a technical issue that screams out size limit. You have to make changes as you get bigger,” he explained to Engineer magazine.
“Blades get floppier, for example, so you have to put more carbon in; but we aren’t anywhere near 100 per cent carbon yet
