A number of luxury car manufacturers are set to unveil their foray into the electric car market at the Geneva Motor Show this month.
The Engineer reported that BMW, Land Rover and Rolls-Royce will all showcase new efficient models, suggesting that they are thinking about a low carbon future.
Indeed, under European law, manufacturers will have to work to reduce the average carbon emissions of their new models or incur a fine.
Most of the models, the news provider notes, are based on existing cars, which will make it more likely that they will make it to market.
Bernhard Hofer, BMW’s chief engineer on the ActiveE, told The Engineer: “To work from scratch would have taken more time than we had. We wanted to start trial production by the middle of 2011 and therefore it would have been otherwise impossible.”
However, each model, such as the Range-e from Land Rover and Nissan’s Esflow, has had issues with moving to electric and providing the speed and power that customers want and expect.
The motor show runs until March 13th.
