London’s Barclays Cycle Hire will be open to all members of the public from tomorrow (December 3rd).
Previously, cyclists had to sign up to the scheme online, which offers the first 30 minutes for free.
This had proved successful, registering over 100,000 users making up to 24,000 trips a day, indicating that many Londoners seek energy efficient transport options on their daily commute.
From tomorrow, consumers can pay for a bike at a docking station using a credit or debit card, and take it away for either 24 hours or seven days.
Speaking ahead of the roll-out, mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “Now [the cycle hire] has been thoroughly tried and tested by more than a hundred thousand members we are ready for the next stage where anyone who fancies taking to two wheels can do so in an instant with a simple swipe of their card.”
According to Transport for London, 95 per cent of all journeys using the scheme are under 30 minutes, meaning that most people do not pay more than £1 daily access.
