Lincoln council test drives EVs

The City of Lincoln council has taken delivery of an electric vehicle (EV) as part of a two-week trial to pilot alternative forms of green transport.

It is taking part in the government’s Smart Move scheme and staff will take it in turns to use the electric smart Fortwo for business use, with the prospect of rolling out EVs across the council in the future.

Indeed, Kate Bell, environmental co-ordinator for the council, told ThisIsLincolnshire.co.uk: “When technology improves electric cars are going to be key for local authorities.”

She explained that currently, although the vehicle would save the council around £50,000 a year in fuel bills, purchasing EVs is not feasible.

However, the council hopes to raise awareness of other transport options.

“If we make people aware of the technology and money becomes available to change our fleet we could look at going electric,” she explained.

“We pay business mileage for staff to do their job around the city – but if everyone was driving an electric car it would only cost us around £5,000 a year.”
