Kelly Services and Converge Pave the Way for Tackling E-Waste

By Mini SwamyTMCnet Contributor

With the advance in technology and with newer electronic goods flooding the market, people are dumping old electronic goods for new ones. Naturally, the amount of E-Waste generated has steadily increased. In the absence of proper disposal of electronic and computer waste, the environment could suffer.

Kelly Services, a leader in workforce solutions, offers a comprehensive array of services and is extending its enterprise wide e-waste program to its own employees.

This way, they can safely recycle personal computers and other consumer electronics from their own homes and contribute their mite to saving the environment.

As part of Kelly’s Company-wide “Recognize” program for sustainable business practices, Kelly joined with Converge and hosted a “take back” event at Troy, Michigan, on May 19, 2010.

Materials collected during the Kelly take-back event will be handled by Converge, which will use best-in-class process for secure, eco-sensitive disposal.

“Corporate social responsibility is a core commitment of Kelly Services,” Nicole VanHaren, manager, desktop management, global infrastructure for Kelly Services, said, and added that the same end-to-end process used for disposal of corporate e-waste will also be applied to the materials that they had collected in the take-back-event.

VanHaren mentioned that they currently worked with Converge for their enterprise IT asset disposition  solutions, and this take-back event was a natural and efficient way to help company employees recycle their used technology.

The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center has found that Americans currently owned newly three billion electronic products. As new products are introduced, the old ones become obsolete and need to be safely disposed every year.

Converge, which is a market leader in business-class ITAD services, is managing the proper disposition of phased-out IT equipment for many of the leading Fortune 500 companies.

“IT asset disposition has quickly become a top strategic issue for businesses, especially larger, multinational organizations,” Chris Adam, VP of ITAD services for Converge, said.

Adam agreed that there were the obvious environmental concerns of putting these volatile materials into the waste stream, but at the same time he admitted that there were serious issues of brand integrity and legal issues that major companies had to address.

Kelly Services, well known for providing workforce solutions, offers a comprehensive array of outsourcing and consulting services, as well as world-class staffing on a temporary, temporary-to-hire and direct-hire basis. Serving clients around the globe, Kelly provides employment to 480,000 employees annually.

Converge is a global supply chain partner for technology-driven companies. The organization’s three business divisions are dedicated to just-in-time distribution of electronic components, and comprehensive reverse supply chain solutions. Founded in 1980, Converge is headquartered in Peabody, Massachusetts, and has offices in Columbus, Ohio; Irvine, Calif.; Singapore; and Amsterdam, along with support centers throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas.

In a related news release, Converge announced a major expansion of its international IT asset disposition facilities to support increasing demand from multinational corporations for secure and “green” disposal of phased-out computer equipment.
