There is no need to build more nuclear power plants in the UK, the Centre for Alternative Energy (CAT) has said, claiming that all of the country’s energy needs can come from renewables.
Alex Randall, spokesman for CAT, explained: “What we have seen in Japan shows us what can happen in a real worst-case scenario. It is expensive and has risks that come with it that renewables simply don’t have.”
He added that nuclear waste is also an issue, particularly potentially radioactive waste.
His comments come after the BBC reported that the nuclear crisis in Japan will not affect plans of EDF to build new reactors in the UK.
There are a number of ways for homeowners to commit to renewable energy.
Solar panels and green electricity can reduce energy bills and any excess energy sold back to the grid can be claimed under feed-in tariffs, while from 2012, payments will also be made to households with renewable heating technology through the Renewable Heat Incentive.
