Households urged to insulate as snow falls early

As the UK experiences the earliest snowfall in 17 years, households have been urged to consider insulation to cope with what could be months of cold weather.

Insurance firm Aviva has called on consumers to insulate their pipes to prevent them from freezing and bursting.

It also suggests that water tanks, boilers and cisterns should have insulating jackets to stop them from freezing. A 75mm thick hot water cylinder jacket could save around £35 a year in lower energy bills, according to the Energy Saving Trust.

Meanwhile, Confused.com advised consumers to take advantage of loft and cavity wall insulation grants which people aged over 70 can get for free.

Homeowners not eligible for a grant can still find a return on their investment from cavity wall insulation in around two years, saving £110 a year in lower bills.

The comparison site advised people who are concerned about having to turn up their heating during the snowfall to provide regular meter readings to their supplier or see if they are considered to be in fuel poverty and seek financial assistance.
