Households told: Use water wisely

Latest news 03 June 2010

Ahead of World Environment Day (Saturday June 5th), the Consumer Council for Water has issued a reminder to households that there are many benefits to using water wisely.

According to the council, reducing water use can cut down on energy use, bills and the overall carbon footprint of the house.

Dame Yve Buckland, chair of the Consumer Council for Water, commented: “It can be easy to forget that all of the water sent to our homes is treated to drinking quality standards, whether it is for drinking, cooking, cleaning, flushing the toilet, or even watering the garden.

“For example, by investing in a water butt to collect rain water, families can avoid having to pay their water companies for the water they use on their gardens.”

According to the council, around 30 per cent of a household’s energy bill comes from hot water usage in baths, showers and laundry.

For those people who use a water meter, cutting back on usage should result in lower bills, claimed the group.
