Green flag for Scottish schools

Latest news 27 May 2010

One thousand schools in Scotland have been awarded Green Flag status for supporting energy efficient initiatives.

The recognition was given to almost one in three local authority-run schools north of the border.

Green Flag status is awarded to schools that can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and can prove their pupils lead the way.

Scottish education secretary Michael Russell said: “Scotland has set the most ambitious climate change targets in the world and we all have a responsibility to live more sustainable lives that don’t compromise the quality of life of future generations.

“It’s highly encouraging, therefore, that our schools are demonstrating a real commitment to sustainability and greener thinking.”

The Green Flag scheme was launched in 1995. The first school to be awarded the status in that year was Shetland’s Lunnasting Primary.

St Joseph’s Primary in Milngavie was named the 1,000th school to receive the recognition.
