The Department for Transport has announced that it will provide £5 million of funding to the Mayor of London in an effort to reduce transport emissions.

Funds will be used to set up a Clean Air Fund to reduce the particulate matter in pollutant areas of the capital, as well as introduce other schemes to encouraging carbon emission reduction.

These include the creation of a no-idling zone, planting trees and vegetation to absorb carbon dioxide and encourage commuters to seek alternative modes of transport such as cycling and walking.

Indeed, Mayor Boris Johnson’s cycle superhighway is currently expanding as part of the second phase of the cycling route.

“This fund will join our panoply of initiatives to cut pollution such as a cleaner New Bus for London, a city-wide electric driving scheme and record investment into cycling,” commented Mr Johnson.

The New Bus for London is expected to be 40 per cent more efficient than conventional double-decker buses and 15 per cent more fuel efficient than hybrid buses.
