Government to honour investment in LEAF

20 million to support the manufacture of the world’s first mass-produced electric car.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), this could help make the UK an “attractive investment” for international motor manufacturers.

The money has been offered in order to persuade the group to manufacture the LEAF, the world’s first mass-produced electric car, in Britain.

Jonathan Visscher, media manager for the SMMT, has said that the fact that the government upheld the financial pledge is “important”.

“It is fairly significant in that it is a sign that the UK is moving towards being a global leader in low carbon industry and being an attractive location investment for international motor manufacturers,” said Mr Visscher.

He added that the government were focused on maintaining funding for the development of electric vehicles before the election and urged them to continue to support this despite the drive to reduce public spending.
