Government promises new energy bill

Latest news 27 May 2010

The coalition government has promised to deliver a new energy bill in the next parliament, which will contain measures to improve home energy efficiency.

Announced in the Queen’s Speech this week, the legislation will also promote low-carbon energy production in the UK.

Key elements of the bill will include the implementation of a green deal, as outlined in the Liberal Democrat election manifesto.

Homeowners and businesses will be offered incentives to improve the energy efficiency of their property as part of a pay-as-you-save scheme.

The legislation will also pave the way for the creation of a Green Investment Bank to support investment in low-carbon projects.

Chris Huhne, the new secretary of state for energy and climate change, said: “The energy bill is designed to help consumers put a stop to wasting energy in their homes through a green deal while making sure our energy system is fit for the 21st century.”
