Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne has joined a host of other energy ministers from around the world to agree to proposals to accelerate the global deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS).
The proposals were put forward by the Carbon Capture, Use and Storage Action Group.
Mr Huhne said at a meeting in the United Arab Emirates that global energy security and an end to climate change cannot be solved without CCS.
“Deployment of the technology is tantalisingly close, but it won’t happen at commercial scale without concerted efforts by governments around the world to address legal, financial and technical barriers,” he commented.
Policies set out in the recommendation include advancing any legal and regulatory frameworks surrounding CCS and sharing knowledge about the technology between nations.
Meanwhile, some actions have already begun, such as a report released by the Global CCS Institute on how the uptake of CCS can be accelerated through reusing captured CO2 from industrial sources.
