The freight industry must lead the debate on climate change in the transport sector in order to make substantial reductions in carbon emissions.
This is the view of the Freight Transport Association, which pointed out that logistics is an innovative sector that has the ability to deliver real results.
Speaking at the International Transport Forum as part of its Expert Panel this week, FTA president Stewart Oades said companies in the freight industry cannot “sit passively by” and react to environmental policy.
Instead, they must be innovative and come up with their own policies to reduce their carbon footprint and act as a role model for other transport sectors.
“The need for industry collaboration is matched by the need for policy makers to shift their focus from punitive taxes and onto rewarding innovation and investment in greener technology and working practices,” Mr Oades remarked.
The International Transport Forum 2010 is being held in Leipzig in Germany from May 26th to 28th.
