Fleet consultants are showing interest in adopting electric vehicles (EVs) as a way of reducing their company’s overall carbon emissions.
This could be due to the benefits low carbon and alternative fuel cars will have for businesses from January, including a government grant of up to £5,000 towards the cost of an EV and 100 per cent exemption from the London Congestion Charge.
According to Peugeot, companies such as Tube Lines, which is responsible for maintenance and upgrade work on the Underground, are considering taking up the manufacturer’s new Peugeot iOn and other electric vans.
Phil Constable, head of specialist services at Tube Lines, said: “I think the Tube Lines fleet can adapt to using electric vehicles; our engineers do 50-70 miles a week and, given the Peugeot iOn has a range of 93 miles, electric works for us. Besides, we have many facilities around the capital for fast charging.”
Property services company Apollo is also considering EVs, as fleet manager Terry Melton explains: “The technology is definitely in place now for electric vehicles to be a success.”
