Facebook Tests Face Detection Technology

Facebook (News – Alert) may not be getting props these days for its privacy policy and settings, however, the super-popular social networking site it is aiming to make life easier for its 400 million users by automating the “tagging” of photos.

Currently, users can “tag (News – Alert)” their “friends” in photos they post to their profile, which can be a tedious task since the tagging of each picture has to be done individually. A blog post on Facebook this week revealed that the site has started testing of face detection technology.“This might surprise you, but within the photos product most people spend their time uploading, browsing and tagging photos. As a result, we’re working to improve your experience in each of those areas. For tagging, we began testing today a faster and easier way for you to tag your own photos,” wrote Sam Odio, a Facebook product manager, on the company’s official blog.

“People love tagging their friends and family in photos, but we’ve heard that it can be a tedious process. You now can add tags with just a couple of clicks directly from your home page and other sections of the site, using the same face detection technology that cameras have used for years. We’re running a limited test of this technology so you may not see it yet.”If you are among the testers, you will see something like this in your photos section:
