There must be a vast uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) if the UK is to meet its climate change targets, WWF-UK has said.
Research by the charity shows that there must be 1.7 million EVs on the roads by 2020, rising to 6.4 million by 2030, in order to reduce transport emissions.
This accounts for one in seven cars by the end of the decade and one in six by 2030.
The ‘Electric avenues: driving home the case for electric vehicles’ report also claimed that even greater low carbon transport should be adopted if the UK is to reduce its reliance on oil.
“It is vital that people start consuming and travelling less to make a transition to a low-carbon economy and reduce our dependency on oil and emissions from cars,” said David Norman, director of campaigns at WWF-UK.
He noted that road transport accounts for 40 per cent of petroleum in the UK.
“So a switch from conventional cars powered by petrol or diesel to EVs would have a much needed impact on reducing fuel demand,” he added.
