School pupils from Edinburgh are today (June 7th) attending a celebration of their environmental efforts.
The event, which is being held at Edinburgh Napier University, is to look at the progress made through the Eco-Schools programme.
Professor Robin Mackenzie, vice-principle at Edinburgh Napier University, commented: “The environmental work of schools, through Eco-Schools, is astounding. Students are arriving at university with more environmental knowledge than ever before.”
He added that the university was aiming to create a learning atmosphere which supports environmental issues.
“Many of our 43 research centres have direct or indirect involvement in work associated with sustainability, renewables or the low carbon economy and both our undergraduate and postgraduate students have the opportunity to really expand their environmental expertise,” said Professor Mackenzie.
There are currently 240 schools in Edinburgh city which are running the project.
To progress with the scheme, schools are required to cover topics from a range including water, health and wellbeing, waste minimisation, litter, transport, school grounds and biodiversity.
