Energy efficient improvements are to be fitted in upto 40 council properties in the Birmingham area.
The city council announced the move as part of the Green New Deal pilot scheme.
“Significant” energy improvements will be made to properties through the use of insulation and small scale renewable energy generation over the next five years.
Councillor John Lines, cabinet member for housing, commented: “I am delighted my tenants will be a part of this pilot project, which will help the environment, drive down tenants’ domestic bills and meet our targets to drastically cut carbon dioxide emission by 2026.
“I’ve always wanted to ensure the best quality housing for our people, as demonstrated by work such as the Decent Homes programme and the innovative Summerfield Eco-housing project. I’m sure that this project will also be a great success and will prove very popular with our tenants.”
The council hopes that the project will help to deliver on one of Birmingham’s climate change commitments.
By 2015, the council pledged to retrofit insulation in ten per cent of the city’s homes.
