The demand for greener transport and better fuel efficiency has been reflected in the buying trends of UK motorists.
Research by HPI found that 40 per cent of the cars it monitored were small engine family cars and superminis, as families look to lower their motoring cots.
Carbon emissions have also become a major concern of modern car buyers, as a third of the vehicles in the survey had an ‘A’ CO2 rating.
In the used car buyer market, alternative fuel vehicles are not as popular, with just one per cent of second-hand cars bought being in this category. This could change in the future, however, as more electric cars come onto the market on a mass-produced scale.
Nicola Johnson, consumer services manager for HPI commented: “The technology is moving forward all the time, with innovation from race teams helping push the envelope for road vehicles, so we are sure we will see a pick up in these vehicle types on the used market over the coming years.”
