The date has been set for this year’s RAC Future Car Challenge, which sees competitors race from Brighton to London in ultra-low carbon vehicles.

This year, the race will run on November 5th, the day before the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

Last year the inaugural event attracted huge amounts of media attention and saw around 250,000 spectators at the finish line on London’s Regent Street.

According to What Car?, around 80 vehicles will take part in the race later this year, compared to the 64 which ran in 2010.

Competitors must have CO2 emissions levels of less than 110 g/km and awards will be handed out to drivers and cars that performed the most efficiently over the 60-mile route.

What Car? magazine editor Jim Holder won the overall prize last year driving a Volkswagen Golf e-motion.

The main aim of the eco rally is to boost awareness among consumers of the benefits of future low emission motoring technologies.
