The London Congestion Charge could be restricted even further for drivers of conventional cars.
Fleet News reported on comments made by the London mayor’s environment advisor Isabel Dedring, who, speaking at a conference held by the Society of Motor Manufacturers, suggested that the cap on the charge should be 80g/km of CO2 by 2013.
Changes to the discount were made in January this year, which saw the capital get tighter on cars that emit large levels of carbon emissions as only cars that emit less than 100g/km of CO2 could qualify for a 100 per cent discount.
Ms Dedring even suggested lowering the discount cap to 60g/km of CO2 by 2025.
The news provider reported that the move is part of London’s plans to encourage more people to purchase electric vehicles.
However, Ms Dedring recognised that currently going electric is too costly for many people.
“People simply do not have the cash to pay for them,” she said. “We are looking to manufacturers to put together an affordable structure in place, so take up in electric vehicles can increase.”
