Coalition deals ‘welcomed’

Latest news 26 May 2010

The coalition government has outlined plans to continue the development of a low carbon economy in the UK.

These plans include the Green Deal scheme which aims to “encourage home energy efficiency improvements paid for by savings from energy bills”.

In the coalition agreement, the parties also revealed its intentions to reduce central government carbon emissions by ten per cent within the next year.

Paul King, chief executive of the UK Green Building Council, welcomed the news, noting that the Green Deal proposal “will give homeowners access to finance to make their homes more energy efficient and could lead to huge improvements in our leaky housing stock”.

However, Mr King urged the coalition government to commit to targets which would see all new homes reach zero-carbon status from 2016.

He said: “I look forward to the new government re-committing to these targets.

“The construction and property industry urgently needs the reassurance that there will be consistency and continuity in this area.”
