Cisco Licenses iOS Trademark to Apple for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Cisco, which owns the name “iOS,” agreed to license its use to Apple (News – Alert) for Apple’s mobile operating system. The name, which Cisco has owned for two decades, will be used for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch gadgets, AppleInsider reported.
“Cisco has agreed to license the iOS trademark to Apple for use as the name of Apple’s operating system for iPhone (News – Alert), iPod touch and iPad,” Cisco blogger Kristin Carvel said in a post that went up Monday. “The license is for use of the trademark only and not for any technology.”
The company said that Cisco (News – Alert) IOS software is the most widely leveraged network infrastructure software in the world, and currently operates on millions of active systems, ranging from the small home office router to the core systems of the world’s largest service provider networks.
News media noted that the prior agreement is different from 2007, when Apple introduced the iPhone — a trademark that was also owned by Cisco. Following Apple’s iPhone announcement, Cisco sued, alleging infringement.

A month later, the two companies reached a settlement that allowed both companies to use the iPhone trademark on their products throughout the world, AppleInsider reported.
