Chrome Gloats while Safari Groans as Browser War Heats Up

By Mini Swamy TMCnet Contributor StatCounter is a Web analytics service. As of 1 June 2010, its tracking code is installed on more than 3 million sites globally. Every month, StatCounter (News – Alert) records billions of hits to the sites it tracks.  Three factors come into play during every hit, the browser used, the OS used, and whether a mobile device was used. The search engine stats and the social media stats analyze every hit referred by a search engine or a social media site respectively. All the accumulated data is summarized and the StatCounter Global Stats Information is received. According to StatCounter, Google (News – Alert) seems to have stolen a march with its Internet browser Chrome, which has overtaken Apple’s (News – Alert) Safari in the United States for the first time. The ratings, which are on a weekly basis seem to indicate that Safari is at the receiving end, something, which Apple will not take kindly to. For the week beginning 21 June, 2010, Chrome sneaked past Safari to be placed third in the U.S. browser market. This information was provided by the research wing StatCounter Global Stats With an 8.97 percent share of the market, Chrome seems to be quite popular with Internet users, and for the first time, it is being used more than Safari, which is used by 8.88 percent of the U.S. for browsing. However, both these browsers are well behind Internet Explorer, which has 52 percent of the market, followed by Firefox with 28.5 percent. Chrome, released just two years ago, has been ahead of Safari worldwide, but for the first time it has won over Safari at home.  Globally, Chrome has been well ahead of Safari for some time with 9.4 percent of the market compared to 4 percent for Safari. Microsoft’s (News – Alert) Internet Explorer has 53 percent of the global market followed by Firefox on 31 percent. StatCounter has arrived at the data after analyzing 3.6 billion page views, out of which 874 million were from the U.S., for the week commencing June 21 -June 27., from over three million Web sites. “This is quite a coup for Google as they have gone from zero to almost 10 percent of the US market in under two years,”Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter, said, adding that there was a royal battle going on between Google and Apple not only in the Internet Browser space, but in the mobile market as well. So who’s next on the cards? Does Chrome have the ability to beat Firefox and Internet Explorer? IE seems to be pretty well saddled, but can Firefox hold its own against the stability of Chrome? Wait and watch. StatCounter, a free online visitor stats tool, was founded in 1999. It offers its members the chance to grow and improve their online businesses by allowing them to monitor the number of hits to their website; the geographical location of visitors; the various pages a visitor views; keywords used to find the site plus other features.
