The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has called for greater clarity about how the government’s Green Deal is to be financed and promoted.
It claims that the scheme, which will allow homeowners to make energy efficient home improvements and pay back the cost through their energy bills, could fail to attract businesses if some things are not made clear now.
According to a survey by the CBI, three-quarters of people moving home do not consider the energy efficiency of a property.
This could affect the success of the scheme, as the loan for home improvements are attached to a property and not the consumer, meaning new homeowners will take on the repayments.
“To ensure the scheme is a success, the government needs to clarify how the Green Deal will be paid for in the early stages to give investors confidence, and make it simple and hassle-free for consumers,” said Dr Neil Bentley, CBI deputy director-general.
He noted however that the scheme is a good idea and that installing insulation and other energy efficiency improvements is “a surefire way of cutting emissions”.
