Carbon impact of packaging ‘reduced’

Latest news 17 June 2010

Dry cat food manufacturer Nestle Purina is to launch a reduced packaging solution later this month.

The design has been created by Toucan and will cut back on the amount of cardboard used in transporting the product.

In addition, the company hopes that the reduced weight will lower its travel-related carbon dioxide emissions.

Andrew Harding, Nestle Purina customer development manager told Packaging News: “Reducing our packaging represents an opportunity for retailers to fulfil their sustainability agendas and maximise shelf space to increase profitability.”

Nestle is one of several companies to have signed up to the Courtauld Commitment.

The agreement sees retailers and manufacturers work together to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by ten per cent by cutting down the amount and weight of their packaging and increasing recycling.

Around 195 tonnes of packaging will be cut by switching to the new designs, resulting in a ten per cent reduction in cardboard use, the pet food company reported.
