Climate change minister Greg Barker has visited a site in Leicester which is helping to develop building techniques for energy efficient housing.
The academy is home to mock-up buildings which allow apprentices and trainees to practise and gain “on-the-job experience” before fitting energy efficient products into real homes.
Fitting insulation is one technique people are able to practice here.
Mr Barker met the 1,000th trainee to graduate from the facility since it opened in 2008.
Commenting on his visit, the climate change minister said: “It is great to meet the faces of the future who, in time, will be making homes in Leicester and across the country warmer, cheaper to run and better for the planet.”
The news comes as two government departments have chosen to display their own energy usage online for the first time.
In a bid to monitor progress in saving energy, the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Home Office will be the first government sectors to display the energy used for heat and lighting in its offices.
